1900 Silver J W Benson "The Ludgate"

A near mint mint and rare solid silver, key-wind English post fusee lever, 18 sized pocket watch, and ticking away strongly and comes with a winding key and keeping good time. The watch signed to the dial and movement for the famous Royal Watch-makers, J. W. Benson of Ludgate Hill. of London and a fine watch by this important English maker. The watch just cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker and keeping very good time for a 110 year old post-fusee pocket watch. The watch is clearly marked silver and in its original period case. The watch is in full working order and comes complete with a key for winding and presentation box.

The firm of James Wilson Benson of Ludgate Hill, held the Royal Warrant from the reign of Queen Victoria and well into the 20th century, they were a highly respected firm of watch and clock makers. The firm were based in Ludgate Hill in the 19th century and obtained the Royal Warrant in 1879. Three grades of high quality watches were made, The Field, The Bank and The Ludgate, intially being made in key-wind and later as keyless models. The firm bought in high grade movements from Nielson, Williamson, Guy and others to supply orders for watches either they did not make or when short of stock.



THE DIAL: 100% mint,the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and in bright condition with no chips or hairlines. The dial with finely made gold spade hands and subsidary seconds. Diameter is 44 mm. The crystal is also in excellent condition.





THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with gilt plates and a Bosely regulator, and blue steel screws. An uncut three arm steel balance, with hairspring and club tooth English lever escapement. The movement overall of very good quality. The watch ticking away on my desk as I type this, and keeping very good time for a 110 year old watch. The watch with number 11847 and with its original silver dust cuvette. The watch comes with a winding key for winding and hands. The watch fully signed to the movement, "The Ludgate Watch, J W Benson,, Patent, No 4658, Best London Make, By Warrant to H. M. The Queen, Ludgate Hill", and 18 ligne size.





THE CASE: 98% mint,the solid silver case measures an impressive 49 mm. The front and rear covers are excellent, both are hinged and close nice and tightly. The case with London hall-marks and silver sterling marks and case number "91271" matching that of the movement. The case sponsor mark of "J.W.B." for the maker J W Benson of Ludgate Hill. The case inner dust cuvette with engraving around the winding holes for hand-set and winding. The reare cover with rubbed rose engine turning and a shield and garter to centre of the rear cover.
