1954 Gold LeCoultre Memovox Alarm

A mint and very rare condition 10k gold filled Swiss Jaeger Le Coultre Memovox wrist watch. The watch ticking away strongly and keeping excellent time indeed, and just cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker in 11/01/2008. This is guaranteed to be a genuine Jaeger LeCoultre Memovox and comes with a letter from the Jaeger London agent dated March 2002, which gives full details of model, case number and date, and from the same collection as a small Memovox watch recently sold on eBay. In 1953 Jaeger-LeCoultre patented their "Memovox," which they launched three years later with their calibers 814 and 815. This watch was the first self-wound wrist alarm in history. In 1959 Jaeger-LeCoultre launched their caliber 825, which was based on the 814/815, but featured a date display. These early alarm watches sounded by a hammer striking the case back. This is a beautifully made Swiss LeCoultre wrist watch, dating from 1954. The watch is in full working order and comes complete with its original presentation box.

THE DIAL: 100% mint, the original gloss black two piece dial with satin silver centre and gold baton markers and signed LeCoultre", and in bright condition, with odd tiny marks. Dial with gold dauphine hands and centre seconds. The centre dial with a small triangular alarm indicator. Diameter is 30 mm. The crystal is also in excellent condition.

THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with silvered and patterned plates and finely engraved balance cock. A shiny blued steel Bosely regulator, and ruby endstone setting, blue steel screws. A cut two arm bimetallic balance, with overcoiled hairspring. The movement working very well indeed and fully signed Jaeger LeCoultre, a model 814 calibre with 17 jewels. The hand-wound 814 calibre started in production in 1953 and was based on the earlier 489 calibre. The watch with a gold colored winding crown.

THE ALARM: 100% mint, this is wound and set by the upper winding gilt button and is in perfect working order and makes a delightful sound when set and used.

THE CASE: 100% mint, the the 10k gold filled two-piece case measures 34 x 40 mm diamensions. The rear cover snaps on nice and tightly as shown. The case number of 54 09273 dates this to the production year of 1954. A paper from Jaeger LeCoultre agent in London dated 19/03/2002 gives this information and will be supplied with the watch. The case with stunning and most unusual flared lugs, very distinctive and stylish. The case stamped "LeCoultre" and 10kt gold filled, also stamped to outside of case back on edge.

THE BOX: 95% mint, the watch comes with its original red morroco leather covered presentation box, with minor wear to outside as shown. The inside signed by the retailer, "M.Jamieson of Portland Street, Kilmarnock", Scotland.
