A mint and very rare condition solid silver cased pocket watch by the famous Watch Company, Thomas Russell of Liverpool, with up/down state of wind and retailed by Hargreaves of Liverpool. The watch recently serviced and overhauled by my watch-maker and keeping very good time indeed.
Going barrel English watches from the late 19th century with up and down indication for the state of wind, are very difficult to achieve with a satisactory result, and are very rare indeed indeed. This watch features one of Thomas Russell's simpler solutions to this problem and works very well indeed. This is a beautifully made English key-wound mans substantial pocket watch, dating from ca. 1901, from the late Victorian period with a rare up/down wind indicationd display. The watch is clearly marked silver and in a consular case. The watch is in full working order and comes complete with a key for winding and presentation box.
THE DIAL: 100% mint, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and in bright condition with no chips or hairlines. The dial with gold spade hands and a blue steel centre seconds hand. Diameter is 47 mm and signed "J. hargreaves & Co. Liverpool. The crystal is also in excellent condition. The dial with up/down state of wind indication in full working order.
THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with finely gilded three-quarter plate and blued steel screws. A cut two arm bimetallic balance, with palladium hairspring and a non-magnetic single-roller lever escapement, with a gold lever. The movement of good quality and ticking away on my desk as I type this, and keeping excellent time and just cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker. The watch signed, "J. Hargreaves and Co., Liverpool, 74633". The watch is key-wound and comes with a winding key. Under the dial on the movement top plate is the Russell movement number "519460".
The watch is in good working order for its age. The watch is key-wound, comes with a watch key and it is set through the rear for winding and via the central square for hands-set through the front.
THE CASE: 100%, the solid silver consular case measures 55 mm. The front and rear covers are excellent, both are hinged and close nice and tightly. The case with top cover which pops open when the pendant button is depressed. The inner solid silver dust cuvette in excellent condition. The case with sterling silver hall marks from Chester and case maker mark of "TR" for Thomas Russell of Liverpool. The top and rear covers in good order. The case band very finely engraved and carved and in superb order. The case with number 519460, matching the Russell number "519460" found under the dial on the movement top plate. So clearly engraved for the retailer by Russell's prior to dispatch.
