A rare and very fine solid silver English, chain fusee Massey 3 lever pair-cased pocket watch made in Clitheroe in the early 19th century, with a rare bi-metal balance wheel and Doctor's Stop-Work, a very rare watch indeed. The movement ticking away very strongly and keeps good time, and just cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker. This is a beautifully made English key-wound mans substantial fusee Massey 3 pocket watch, dating from 1836. The watch is clearly marked silver and in its original period case. THE DIAL: 100% mint, with the ivory enamel dial with fine black slender Roman numerals with no hairlines and no chips. The dial with black minute markers to the outside edge and hour dot markers. Dial with gold breguet type moon hands. Diameter is 46 mm. The glass is also in excellent condition.
THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with finely mercurial gilded full plate and nicely engraved and decorated balance cock. A shiny blued steel Bosley regulator, and substantial diamond endstone setting, blue steel screws. An uncut three arm bi-metal, steel and brass balance, with flat hairspring and jewelled to the balance staff. The watch a typical Massey lever with ruby jewel in front as shown. The escapement in very good condition. The movement with lots of nice features such as an extended fusee ratchet spring, and Harrison's maintaining power and marked "Patent". On the movement top plate it is numbered, 95 and signed John Rawsthorne of Clitheroe. The watch is key-wound, and set through the back and comes with a key. The movement with original gilt dust cover which closes tight onto the movement. The Doctor's stop-work in full working condition. The movement overhaul in superb order showing little wear and excellent gilding to the plates and dust cover.
THE CASE: 100% mint, the very substantial and original solid silver outer case measures an impressive 58 mm outside diameter. The inner silver case measures 51 mm diameter. The hinges are excellent with the case covers all closing tightly, and the bow is original to the case. The watch case with Chester hall marks and sterling stamps. This is a very good quality case, in very nice order and further marked "2 Oz". The case with the silver sponsor mark of " CJ". The top pendant and bow also in fine condition. This is a high quality and very rare watch, a work of art in its own right in crisp condition.
