A rare and very fine solid silver English, chain fusee Massey 2 lever pocket watch made in the Liverpool area in the 19th century, with a slow beating large escape wheel, a very rare watch indeed. The movement ticking away very strongly and keeps good time, and just cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker. This is a beautifully made English key-wound mans substantial fusee Massey II pocket watch, dating from 1824. The watch is clearly marked silver and in its original period case. THE DIAL: 100% mint, with the ivory enamel dial with fine black Roman Roman numerals with no hairlines or chips. The dial with black minute markers to the outside edge and hour dot markers and early large sized seconds dial. Dial with gold spade hands. Diameter is 46 mm. The glass is also in excellent condition.
THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with finely mercurial gilded full plate and balance cock, with grotesque mask to the base. A shiny blued steel Bosley regulator, and substantial diamond endstone setting, blue steel screws. An uncut three arm steel balance, with flat hairspring and jewelled to the balance staff, escape wheel and 3rd wheel with large Liverpool ruby jewels. The watch a typical Massey lever with ruby jewel in front as shown. The escapement in very good condition. The movement with lots of nice features such as an extended fusee ratchet spring, and Harrison's maintaining power and marked "Warranted" and "Detached". The watch is key-wound, and set through the back and comes with a key. The movement with original gilt dust cover which closes tight onto the movement. The movement overhaul in superb order showing little wear and excellent gilding to the plates and dust cover. The watch with doctor's stop/start work in full functioning order
THE CASE: 95% mint, the very substantial and original solid silver drum case measures an impressive 52 mm outside diameter. The hinges are excellent with the case covers all closing tightly, and the bow is original to the case. The watch case with Chester hall marks and sterling stamps. This is a very good quality case, with a rubbed ribbed case band. The case with the silver sponsor mark of " WIH". The top pendant and bow also in fine condition. The rear cover pops open when the top pendant button is firmly depressed and the rear hinge nice and tight. This is a high quality and very rare watch, a work of art in its own right in crisp condition, with a ribbed case band with wear.
