1877 Plymouth 18k Gold & Enamel Fusee
[SJD339]
1,695.00

A mint and substantial solid 18k gold chain driven fusee lever pocket watch made by Pace, Keen and Page in Plymouth in the 19th century, dating from 1877. The watch in a very high quality fully engraved solid 18k gold case, so clearly made for someone with a deep pocket when new, 150 years ago. The watch with the unusual feature for an English watch of a full enamel back with scene of a young maiden.

THE DIAL: 90% mint, the gold dial with black Roman numerals in bright condition with an engine turned and decorated edge and floral and leafy centre, with minor loss to a few numerals and minor marks. Dial with blue steel fleur-de-lys hands. Diameter is 38 mm. The domed glass is also in excellent condition.

THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with finely mercurial gilded full plate and finely engraved balance cock. A shiny blued steel Bosely regulator, and a substantial ruby endstone setting, fine blued steel screws. A large 9k gold balance, with flat hairspring and jewelled to the balance staff and the 3rd wheel. An English lever escapement and fusee in very good condition. The movement with lots of nice features such as an extended fusee ratchet spring, and Harrison's maintaining power.  On the movement top plate it is numbered 95027 and made by Pace, Keen and Page in Plymouth  with an intergal dust cover.

THE CASE: the solid 18K gold  case measures an impressive 40 mm outside diameter and the complete watch weighs a substantial 60 grams. The hinges are excellent with the covers all closing tightly, and the bow is original and tight to the case. The watch with London hall marks and 18K stamps.  The top pendant and bow also in stunning condition. The case band with a raised finely ribbed profile.

This is a high quality case with deep and rich polychrome enamel portrait to the case back in vry fine order, with minor loss at extreme edges at 3.00  and 5.30 position.
