1893 Benson Perpetual Calendar

An immaculate and substantial solid silver English keyless pocket watch, fully serviced, overhauled and keeping good time and guaranteed. The watch is fully signed and made by the Royal watch-makers, James Wilson Benson of London. The watch of goliath size and fully working perpetual calendar with moon-phase.The watch has been fully cleaned by my watch-maker and running very strongly and keeping excellent time and a fine example of a high grade watch from the late Victorian / Edwardian period. .  

 

 

THE DIAL: 100%, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, with subsidary seconds and in very bright condition with no chips or hairlines. The dial with blue steel spade hands. Diameter is 58 mm. The crystal is in excellent condition. The dial marked to the top at 12.00 with day of month from 1-31; to the right at 3.00 with day of week; at 6.00 the phases of the moon and at 9.00 the months of the year. All subsidary hands and dials for the perpetual calendar in full working order, removing the silver bezel to the front allows access to the small push-pin adjusters. Once the watch is set to the correct time, provided it is wound on a regular basis the calendar work is self-changing..

 

 

 

THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with gilded plates and finely gilded balance cock. A diamond endstone setting to balance cock and blue steel screws. A cut two arm bimetallic balance, with over-coiled Breguet hairspring and jewelled to the balance staff and a lever escapement in very good condition. The movement with 11 jewels, and anti-banking to the end of the pallets of moustache type. The hand-set by pushing in the push-piece at 1.00 and turning the winding crown at the same time.  

 

 

 

THE CASE: 100%,95% mint, the substantial solid silver case measures an impressive 65 mm outside diameter. The screw-on covers both closing tightly and with ribbed edges. The case marked with Swiss and London import hall-marks and sterling silver marks. The snap on front bezel and silver case back close very tightly, thereby ensuring a good dust proof seal. The inner silver dust cuvette also closes tightly and fully signed by way of a gift in 1893. The watch inscribed as follows: "From C. J. Westwood to, A. Mc Millian, Purser, R.M.S. "Hawarden Castle" in remembrance of a pleasant voyage from Cape Town to Plymouth November 1893.The rear cover with very fancy and elaborate monogram consisting of "A", "M" and a shield, no dount for A. Mc Millian.
