1900 Benson Silver Goliath

A mint silver plated very rare hi-grade keyless goliath 8-day pocket watch with a 15 jewelled movement, and made by the Royal Watch-Makers, J. W. Benson of London. The watch dating from ca. 1900-1910 period and it is keyless-wind and with a fine white enamel dial. This watch is very clean and is keeping excellent time for a ca. 100 year old watch and just cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker. This is a beautifully made keyless-wound man's silver-plated 8-day pocket watch, dating from ca. 1900.

THE DIAL: 100% mint, the original white enamel dial with fine white Romannumerals and in bright condition with no hairlines or chips to. Dial with blued steel spade hands and subsidary seconds. Diameter is 60 mm and signed J. W. Benson , London and also "8 Days". The crystal is also in excellent condition.

THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with superb gilded plates and keyless set. A silvered steel regulator, and ruby endstone setting, and blued steel screws. The movement jewelled to the balance staff and escape wheel and through the train. The watch is keyless-wind and movement size is 53 mm diameter. The watch is ticking away very strongly and keeping very good time for a 100 year old watch. The movement of attractive and unusual format, and in very clean and good order. The movement with a very tight fitting dust cuvette, to keep dirt and moisture out.

The watch with several rare and unusual features, these include: the barrel cover rotating when the watch is wound - anice feature if you wish to confirm the mainspring is winding; an anti-slip ratchet, visible when winding, a small pin moves back and forth in a tiny slot close to the barrel; and finally the pallets of a moustache design to stop over-banking, a problem encountered with many goliath watches.

THE CASE: 100% mint, silver plated case measures 66 mm outside diameter. The front and rear covers are hinged and both close tightly, and the bow is original to the case. The case in crisp condition, with minor scratches commensuare with the age of the watch. The front bezel with minor wear, and a copper insert to hold the glass in tightly, a nice non-standard feature. This is a high quality watch, in crisp condition and of fabulous quality. This watch has clearly had a sheltered life and was most likely kept just for "Sunday Best", hence its near mint and immaculate condition.
