1890 J W Benson Cylinder Chronograph

A mint condition hi-grade keyless 18 size chronograph pocket watch made for the Royal Watch-Makers, J W Benson of London. The watch dating from ca. 1890 and it is keyless-wind. This watch is very clean and is keeping excellent time for a 100 year old watch and just cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker on 4/03/2008. The chronograph watch giving direct readings to 1/5 of a second and with a 5 minute time recorder. The watch with a separate button to start, stop and reset the chronograph function. The watch movement uses Arnold Huguenin's Patent Chronograph Mechanism of 3 May 1883, UK Patent 2258m with separate chronograph mechanism and time read-out as shown on this pocket watch. This is a beautifully made J. W. Benson chronograph pocket watch with very rare feature of separate time-recorder to upper subsidary dial, dating from ca. 1890.



THE DIAL: 100% mint, the white enamel dial with fine black Roman and Arabic numerals and in bright condition. Dial with finely made blue steel hands. Diameter is 45 mm. The crystal is also in excellent condition. The dial signed J W Benson, London, as shown. The white enamel dial indicating 1/5 seconds with 5 seconds black Arabic numerals and with an inset lower subsidary dial above 6 o'clock for elapsed minutes 1-5. The upper subsidary dial tells the time and centre seconds hand gives an accurate reading to the nearest second. The inner crystal is also in excellent condition and retained securely.




THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with with superb gilding and three quarter gilded plate and keyless set. A silvered steel micrometer regulator, and ruby endstone setting, and blued steel screws. The movement jewelled to the balance staff and steel cylinder escape wheel. The watch is keyless-wind and movement size is 44 mm diameter. The watch is ticking away very strongly and keeping very good time for a 100 year old watch. The movement identified in the book, "Pocket Watches 19th and 20th Century, by Alan Shenton, pages 280 and 328. The watch ticking away on my desk as I type this, and keeping excellent time and just cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker. The watch movement signed, "Swiss Made".



THE CHRONOGRAPH: 100% mint, and in full working order. The dial with conventional hour, minute and subsidary seconds hand, with hand set via the push-piece at 1.00 in the case band. The chronograph operated from the central crown, depressing this starts, stops or returns the centre hand to zero. All functions are in full working order and all hands return to the zero or 12 o'clock starting position.


THE CASE: 100% mint, the silver plated or nickel plated case measures 54 mm outside diameter. The front and rear covers both close tightly, and the bow is original to the case. The case rear cover, case band and case front bezel all in crisp condition. The case with case number of 504,xxx. The case band and case covers in excellent condition and all very crisp and fresh.
